The bathroom is where kids smoke the first cigarettes or joints, hiding from parents and teachers. In schools it is often where they kiss for the first time or where they socialize or show off with their schoolmates, a rite of passage for teenagers. In nightclubs or bars, people have occasional drunken sex in bathrooms or they use drugs both alone and with others. Whatever the action, when it takes place behind the bathroom door it is our secret and a mystery for everyone else, who indeed often speculate on what might be happening in there. Accordingly, the bathroom signifies secrecy as well as safety, since whoever is inside the bathroom feels safe to be able to indulge in their actions unseen and undisturbed by the public gaze.
