Sian Ka’an Adventure

On our fourth year of extended stay in Tulum (Riviera Maya, Mexico) we finally decided to explore the Sian Ka’an biosphere until its tip: Punta Allen. A jeep, a camera and a group of good friends it’s all you need!

The Sian Ka’an biosphere is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its unique natural environment: in addition to hundreds of plant and animal species, including jaguars, crocodiles and cranes, Sian Ka’an is where sea water and fresh water meet. The ocean and the lagoon are, in fact, separated only by the sole narrow road that stretches from the biosphere’s entrance gate to Punta Allen. The proximity of sea and fresh water creates a very particular energy – an empowering one –  that you can feel as you make your way through the reserve.

The lagoon has over 23 archeological sites of the Maya civilization including the Muyil canals, the ancient passages that the Mayans used for their commerce and goods transportation.

The road was super bumpy but so worth it! Punta Allen is a cute and peaceful fishermen village with a couple of little restaurants on the beach where we ate delicious lobster and ceviche. From the shore you can see the waves breaking on the coral reef, where snorkeling is highly recommended.

The sunrise on the sea side is stunning and the sunset on the lagoon is absolutely breathtaking!
